Denzel Washington Confirms Ryan Coogler Is Writing a Role for Him in ‘Black Panther 3’

Denzel Washington, a two-time Oscar winner, has revealed that he’s in discussions with Ryan Coogler for a role in the upcoming Black Panther 3. Known for his discerning choice of projects, Washington’s involvement in the Marvel blockbuster is part of a carefully curated lineup reflecting his commitment to working with the best filmmakers in the industry.

While promoting Gladiator II during an interview with Australia’s Today Show, Washington addressed questions about taking on high-stakes roles. Asked whether he felt any “trepidation or pressure” about joining Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated sequel starring Paul Mescal, Washington expressed confidence, viewing the role of Macrinus as another step in his strategy of collaborating with world-class talent.

“For me, it’s about the filmmaker, especially at this point in my career,” Washington said during the interview. “I’m only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m gonna make—probably not that many. I want to take on projects I haven’t done before.”

Washington’s Career Vision and Upcoming Projects

At 69, Denzel Washington has hinted at a possible retirement after completing a string of high-profile projects. Among these are two portrayals of Othello, a role he first played in his twenties, as well as collaborations with top directors.

“I played Othello at 22. I’m about to play Othello at 70,” Washington shared. “After that, I’m taking on Hannibal. Then, I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film. Following that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I’m going to do the film Othello again. Then I’ll take on King Lear. And after that? I’m retiring.”

A Personal Connection to the Black Panther Franchise

Washington’s involvement in Black Panther 3 holds deep personal meaning, given his connection to the late Chadwick Boseman, who led the original film to global acclaim. Early in Boseman’s career, Washington provided financial support that helped the young actor and his peers pursue their dreams. Boseman later credited Washington’s generosity, famously stating, “There would be no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.”

Gladiator II and Other Notable Work

In addition to his Black Panther involvement, Washington is set to appear in Gladiator II, alongside Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn. The film, directed by Ridley Scott, will premiere in theaters on Nov. 22. Reflecting on his experience on the film’s elaborate set, Washington’s confidence and passion for excellence remain evident, solidifying his reputation as one of Hollywood’s greatest icons.
