The body of water traditionally known as the Gulf of Mexico is now listed as the Gulf of America for U.S.-based users on Google Maps. The change follows an executive order signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which officially renamed the body of water to “honor American greatness.”

According to Google, its policy is to reflect official government naming conventions where applicable. In a statement, the company said, “People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Gulf of America,’ while users in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico.’ Users in other countries will see both names.”

This isn’t the first major geographic name change under the Trump administration. An earlier executive action sought to rename Denali, the tallest peak in North America, back to its previous name, Mount McKinley. The mountain was originally renamed Denali in 2015 by President Barack Obama to honor Alaska’s Indigenous heritage. However, as of Tuesday, that change has not yet been reflected on Google Maps.

Broader Changes Across U.S. Agencies

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also issued a notice to update official maps and charts with the new names, and the U.S. Coast Guard has begun adopting the Gulf of America name in its public communications.

Google Calendar has faced scrutiny for recent updates as well. Some users noticed that certain cultural events, such as Pride Month and Black History Month, were no longer displayed by default. This change prompted criticism from some who felt it reduced the visibility of important cultural moments.

In response, a Google spokesperson explained that the Calendar update was part of a broader redesign in mid-2024. “We previously maintained hundreds of cultural moments manually across various countries, but this became unsustainable. Now, we focus on public holidays and official observances from timeanddate.com, while giving users the option to add other events manually,” the spokesperson said.
